Guest Cottage Rental Property
Nestled in beautiful Kent Hollow not far from the village center of the charming
historic southwestern Vermont village of West Rupert is Bear Mountain Farm, named
for the mountain rising to 3,300 feet in the farm’s backyard. The village is 4
miles from the farm and has a post office, church and Sherman’s - the local general
store, a gathering place for residents and visitors where the news of the world,
neighbors and friends is reviewed over hot coffee and donuts. The farm has a small
apple orchard, blueberry and raspberry patch but the principle attraction and
producers of fine natural colored yarns are the Romney sheep. See the flock and
some scenery at www.bearmountainfarm.com Our guest cottage is circa 1865, very
private and on a quintessential, very well maintained Vermont dirt road. There
is little traffic, so vehicles, bicycles and the occasional horse passing by always
turn heads. The cottage has unique naturalistic woodwork crafted by ‘Old Joe’
a local legend who escaped the city in the fifties and spent his days woodworking.
Vermonters would stop to chat and oftentimes bring an unusual tree limb or trunk
for Joe to creatively transform into a door handle or table pedestal. The living/dining
room has sliders to a small patio adjacent to a pristine, crystal clear stream
with it’s resident brook trout and Zen like riffles. A footbridge leads to sloping
meadows; a climb up the trail to the top yields a view of Bear Mountain and the
Hollow. The kitchen is fully equipped, except for dishwasher (washing dishes while
looking out to the steam is an enjoyable chore). There is a small bath with sink
and stall shower. In the living area is a sofa bed that sleeps two and upstairs
(the stairs are steep!), there are two bedrooms, one double, one single. The upstairs
is small and has low ceilings but the effect is cozy and secure. There is an oil-burning
furnace and forced hot air heat but the woodstove in the living room is often
the visitor’s choice providing both heat and atmosphere. Linens are provided -
for long stays interim linen/laundry service is available for a fee. This cottage
is a true retreat but yet in the heart of places to go and things to see – West
Arlington, home of Norman Rockwell and the famed Battenkill River, Merck Forest
(3000 acres with hiking trails and farm www.merckforest.org), Manchester and Dorset
for shopping and superb dining, Bromley and Stratton to ski or play golf, and
Saratoga, an easy scenic drive, home of the famed Saratoga Race Track and the
Saratoga Performing Arts Center www.spac.org summer home of the New York City
Ballet and Philadelphia Orchestra. Our guest cottage hosts many repeat visitors:
writers, artists and outdoor lovers all seeking a restorative, peaceful retreat.
